Imagine setting yourself a goal or two for the new year…

…and actually achieving them. Imagine the feeling of accomplishment and a sense of pride.

In our blog, we’re going to look at how you can set goals and get to them.

First things first. Goals won’t just complete themselves. You need to be disciplined in your pursuit of them and keep going no matter how hard it seems.

Step 1: Decide what you really want to achieve. 

Don’t think about what your competitors are doing, or what other people are suggesting. Advice can be really helpful, but ultimately, these have to be your goals. Studies show that when your goals are personally meaningful, you’re more likely to achieve them.

If you’re finding this difficult, we suggest taking some quiet time and really go into yourself.  What is it that you want? The answer to this is often a mixture of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Consider asking yourself questions, such as “What do I want to offer my family?” “What is it I want for my life right now?” “Why did I start this business in the first place” “How do I want to grow?” “Where do I want to be in 5 years?” These questions can help you determine the direction to take.

It’s okay if your ideas aren’t totally specific at this point.

Step 2: Prioritise

Once you know what it is you want to achieve, you need to prioritise these. Trying to do everything at once can leave you overwhelmed and, in most cases, dipping your toes in to everything but not really achieving anything.

Sort your goals. Find the ones that are most important to you and focus on these first. They’re more likely to come more naturally. And once you tick a few of these off, you’ll be more inspired to reach those that are less important (but still goals all the same).

Step 3: Get Specific

Setting specific and detailed goals is going to allow you to focus. Research shows setting specific goals makes you more likely to achieve them and can even make you feel happier in general. If being specific means breaking large goals into easier bite size goals, that’s totally ok.

When being specific and detailed, think about things like “What do you need to achieve them?” “Do you need someone to help you? Who?”  Think about the individual actions you need to take to reach the overall goal.

Step 4: Be Realistic

Having aspirations is great, but setting unrealistic goals is going to be soul destroying and result in you giving up.

By all means have an end result; The BIG goal that you want to work towards. However, what is it that is going to help you get there? These are the immediate goals.

Being realistic also means setting a deadline. Having a goal is great, but unless you set a deadline to achieve it by, will you really work hard to get it? Be fair to yourself with the timeline but don’t leave it open ended.

Make sure your goals are measurable too. How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal?

Step 5: Write your Specific Goals down

Knowing your goals is great but writing them down tends to feel more real. Keep the list somewhere accessible and refer to them frequently to keep you motivated and remind you of where your focus should be.

Write your goals positively. It’s so much easier to achieve your goals when you have the right mindset, and this starts from the very beginning. Reading a positive statement is going to get you fired up for success.

Step 6: Identify Possible Obstacles

Nobody really wants to think about what could go wrong when they’re planning for success. However, identifying potential obstacles and how you’ll deal with them is crucial to achieving your goals. If you don’t, you won’t have a game-plan when challenges present themselves.

Step 7: Tell People about your Goals

Don’t be afraid that if you tell people and you don’t reach your goals, you’ve failed. Letting people know your goals may open doors of opportunity. Reaching your goals doesn’t have to be a solo game. You may connect with people who have the tools to help you get one step closer to achieving your goal.

Step 8: Visualise your Goals

Research has shown that visualising your goals can improve performance. It may seem unnatural at first, but here’s a few tips to help get you started.

What does it feel like to achieve that goal? Are you proud? Happy? Are you celebrating with anyone? If it’s a physical item, what does it feel like?

Step 9: Review your Goals

Are you on track? Do you need to change your strategy slightly? Reflect on the steps you have taken so far to reach your goals.

Once you have achieved a goal, don’t delete it entirely. Why not move it to a “completed goals list” as motivation for tougher times.

Remember, reaching your goals takes hard work, passion and perseverance. When you feel like giving up, remember why you started in the first place. And don’t forget to celebrate your wins. No matter how small you think they may be. An achievement is an achievement.
